May bring new DND for auto-rejecting phone calls and muting notifications

An updated version of Do Not Disturb in iOS 12 will give users more options to automatically reject phone calls or silence notifications.

iOS 11 has extended Do Not Disturb mode to drivers with a new feature called Do Not Disturb While Driving. As the name suggests, this new mode silences all incoming phone calls and notifications when your iPhone determines you’re currently driving.

Bloomberg has shared other interesting details pertaining to Apple’s renewed focus on software quality. As previously reported, engineering teams should have more time to work on new features and focus on under-the-hood refinements in an effort to curb bugs and flaws.

Said to more deeply integrate Siri into iphone’s search view

iOS 12, internally code-named “Peace”, will reportedly bring several Siri improvements to the mix, among them deeper integration between the smart assistant and the system-wide search feature on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Mark Gurman, reporting Monday for Bloomberg, claims that the Cupertino technology giant is working hard to “more deeply integrate Siri into the iPhone’s search view” on iOS 12. The author did not elaborate further, but the wording suggests he is referring to the system-wide Search feature, formerly known as Spotlight.

iOS 11 brought several new Search and Siri improvements, including giving users the ability to control which apps are allowed to be indexed by Siri in order to make relevant suggestions when using the Search and Look Up features or typing using the QuickType keyboard.

Other enhancements in iOS 12 reportedly include an enhanced Do Not Disturb mode with additional options to automatically reject phone calls or silence notifications, as well as Animoji improvements such as FaceTime and iPad support, new characters and more.

SAID TO OVERHAUL UI FOR IMPORTING PHOTOS

Bloomberg’s piece covering Apple’s renewed focus on software quality is full of unexpected tidbits related to some of the new features and enhancements in iOS 12 and macOS 10.14.

One of the new features in iOS 12, according to Bloomberg News author Mark Gurman, includes “a redesigned interface used to import photos into an iPad on the go.”

The report is short on details, but seems to refer to the interface that appears when importing photos directly from a USB source via Apple’s Lightning to USB Camera Adapter.

It’s unclear why the story paints importing photos as an iPad-only feature.

With iOS 9.2 and later, customers can actually take advantage of Apple’s adapter in order to import their DSLR photographs and other images stored on an SD card, a USB camera or other USB source into any Lightning-equipped iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

It’s entirely possible this overhauled UI has nothing to do with importing photos from a USB source, in which case it’s possible Apple might be planning to improve the photo-import process by enhancing existing features, like AirDrop, the “Open In” prompt and more.

CODE-NAME “PIECE ” REPORTEDLY INCLUDES A REDESIGNED STOCKS APP

iOS 12 should bring some notable interface improvements to the overall user experience, and the upcoming changes reportedly include a thoroughly overhauled Stocks app.

Mark Gurman wrote for Bloomberg News this morning that “a redesigned version of Apple’s stock-tracking app” is in the works for this year. The last major visual overhaul for the Stocks app happened alongside the iOS 7 software update a few years back.

Internally code-named “Peace,” this year’s software update will likely be called iOS 12.

Other changes in iOS 12 reportedly include a multiplayer ARKit in games, a merger of the third-party apps running on iPhones, iPads and Macs, the ability for iPhone’s Do Not Disturb mode to automatically reject unwanted phone calls and silence notifications, deeper Siri integration into iOS’s Search view, Animoji improvements like FaceTime and iPad support and new characters, a redesigned interface when importing photos on the go and more.
